The high calibre of workmanship was exhibited blending the new contemporary building works sympathetically to the existing home.

This grand home had received a number of additions over the years and Urban Habitats was called on to provide a final and cohesive design solution to enhance the existing home while providing an elegant contemporary living space that interacted with the existing pool and rear garden areas. Consistency of materials, finishes, proportions and detailing were integrated into the design along with extensive use of glass.

The timeless Bluestone villa underwent demolition of the existing kitchen, conservatory and verandah structure making way for a contemporary functional entry / kitchen / pantry and dining addition accessing the feature outdoor covered terrace to the rear of the property and greatly enhancing the engagement with the rear yard and pool area. The outdoor terrace is a key feature defined by its with exposed steel beams, glass balustrade and spotted gum timber floor deck.

Numerous contractors were engaged to achieve the high level of finish to the external elements of this project. All contractors used on this project are regular and preferred contractors of Urban Habitats considered a valuable extension of our team.

The new stand alone garage continues the beautiful solid Kanmantoo Bluestone work with brick bands and blends beautifully with the original home and salvaging and recycling materials such as brick paving border and the western red cedar window and access door. Other inclusions to the building works such as wet-laid granite paving and driveway and fencing were undertaken with the same attention to detail.

A key feature is the huge structural steel colonnades to the western side elevation of the project to create an engaging space for what may otherwise have been a forgotten area of the build. The detail and finish of these elements is very precise with mitre-joined site welds and architectural wiring detail to create a space that will develop with the establishment of a creeper over time.

The well-resourced selection of material finishes chosen to integrate the old with the new is achieved.

As you enter into the new extension you are greeted with abundance of natural light provided from the large commercial window and sliding doors reflecting onto the warm timber black-butt flooring. Eye catching beautifully crafted contemporary inclusions of a floating console table through to the built-in shelves and cabinetry as you entry the room. The upper-level glazing is a key design feature and contributed the sense of space and grandeur of the addition.

“This project went seamlessly from start to finish, including excellent design work and high quality materials and installation. The UH team were highly responsive and consultative throughout the project. We are delighted with the end result.”
