The Crafers House.
Celebrating form – this is a lively home for a modern family.
Our Crafers home takes you on a journey. Constructed with a mix of materials, you are welcomed with a rich, dark exterior and spaces within that are noticeably lighter and effortless. Our clients were attracted to this particular site in the Adelaide Hills – it has a very special feel to it.
This type of setting is the perfect opportunity for Urban Habitats to showcase its skill and style in an end-to-end resolution from concept design through to handover.
Our detailed design process developed an elegant yet simple home inside and out, with the budget limitations embraced from the outset. The aspect and relief of the site were managed in a manner that provides a stunning result and creates a strength of design and outcome.
Looking for land in the hills, the last thing you seek is a site with southern aspect, limited solar access and some serious level issues to address, however this site had a very specific feel to it. Our clients were attracted to the dramatic surrounds and knew that with a clever response to the above challenges we could come up with a pretty special result.
Designing a home around maximising solar access and creating a private external space were the critical parameters, with specific focus on thermal performance of the home and an economical response to the relief over the building footprint. A grouping of three gable-roofed pods joined by a flat roof hallway is the format of the response.
The house is constructed with a mix of natural products, linear elements and a fully insulated heated slab to provide a core warmth both physically and aesthetically. The mix of cement sheeting, bagged brickwork and western red cedar windows offset by the black finish to both wall and roof creates a striking but homely built form that is grounded appropriately within the setting and works in harmony with the setting.
The internal palette of material carries in from the external selection and creates a functional, warm family home that we have enjoyed greatly thus far and look forward to many more years living in this space as the landscaping grows.
This home responds perfectly to the site’s complications and client’s desires.
“We are so pleased with the result of our Urban Habitats home, it provides for the way we want to live and engages with the location perfectly.”
